Welcome To The
Newport RI Lions Club
Who Are The Lions?
To many people the words
“Lions Club” have little meaning. True, the
name is familiar, but very few people know what
the Lions Club is and what its members do.
The International Association of Lions began
in 1917 as the dream of a Chicago
businessman, Melvin Jones, who wondered why
local business clubs could not expand their
horizons from purely business concerns to
the betterment of their communities and the
world at large. He was convinced that the
lion would be a good symbol of this because
it stood for strength, courage, fidelity and
vital action, and so, on a secret ballot the
name Lions was chosen over several others.
In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions
international convention in Cedar Point,
Ohio. She challenged Lions to become
"knights of the blind in the crusade against
darkness." From that day to the present,
Lions Clubs have been actively involved in
service to the blind and visually impaired.
Lions have grown to become the largest service
organization in the world with 1.3 million
men and women in 202 countries and
geographic areas who work together to answer
the needs that challenge communities around
the world.
Known for working to end preventable
blindness, Lions participate in a vast
variety of projects important to their
communities. These projects range from
cleaning up local parks to providing
supplies to victims of natural disasters.
